PAINTING AND DECORATING

The role of Painters and Wallpaper Installers involves more than just making a house, building or room "look nice." Today’s crafts-person in the painting and wallcovering field must know how particular paint, wallpaper, carpeting, and color schemes can complement each other. When a person paints or designs any interior setting, he or she must account for the brightness of an area, the durability of the decorating materials, and the cost of the materials to the customer. These considerations are true for exterior house or building painting, too.

In the Painting and Decorating program, the students acquire the skills and knowledge they must possess in order to be a competitive worker in this field. The program emphasizes "live work" projects. Besides painting and wallpapering the students will also learn stenciling, airbrush painting, signmaking and drywall repair.  The students learn not just what to do, but how to do it!

Students in the Painting & Decorating Program will gain real life work experience by participating in the construction of a student-built modular home project.  This live, project provides a unique opportunity for students in the Construction related programs.  Students in these programs practice and develop their skills and knowledge better while building a home that someone will actually live in one day.  This experience helps to prepare them to go right to work in the construction industry or continue their education at a college or trade school.

Recommended Scope and Sequence This link will connect you to the scope and sequence which lists the recommended high school and postsecondary courses for students in this program of study. This information will be valuable when scheduling courses or investigating postsecondary options. It is recommended that students take the highest level academics possible in order to take full advantage of their program. These rigorous academics will provide a seamless transition into postsecondary education without remediation and provide a student with the general knowledge necessary for the industry.

Message
Ben Franklin once said, “He that hath a trade, hath an estate.” If the student choosing the painting and decorating program at RMCTC is serious about learning the trade, he or she, no matter what ability level, will be given the opportunity to gain employment. Once the student gains experience working with a painting and decorating contractor, the trade demands little investment for owning your own business which cannot only lead to monetary value, but the distinction of being an asset to the community where he or she lives. Honesty and quality workmanship will lead one to their estate in the trade.
